Lottery scam making the rounds in the Soo
(2007-02-14)
SAULT STE. MARIE, MI
(wnmu) -
Troopers from the Sault Ste. Marie Post are warning residents about the newest scam. Officers say several people have received a letter identifying them as the winner of an "International Lottery" in the mail. The victims also receive checks, which they are instructed to deposit and send half back for a "processing" fee. Police say the checks are not valid, and victims may end up having to cover the bad check if they cash them. For more information, go to the Michigan State Police website at www.michigan.gov/msp, or the FBI Internet Crimes site at www.fbi.gov.
