A regional jail in the central U.P. is a real possibility. That's according to Delta County Administrator Joseph Erickson. He says jails in Alger, Schoolcraft, Dickinson, Marquette, Delta, and Menominee counties are at or near capacity, and the buildings are getting older. Erickson says discussions with county board members, administrators and sheriffs are a proactive approach in solving the situation. Erickson says the jail would have to be constructed on county land somewhere in the central U.P. He notes it could be located in Powers at the Pinecrest Medical Facility, or somewhere in Delta county. Erickson says talks are in the preliminary stage, and officials are seeking grants to conduct a feasibility study for the project. © Copyright 2013, wnmu
