Doyle proposes smoking ban and tobacco tax increase
(2007-01-26)
MADISON, WI
(wnmu) -
In Wisconsin news, Governor Jim Doyle wants to increase the cigarette tax by $1.25 per pack and ban smoking in all workplaces, bars and restaurants. Doyle calls his plan a broad assault on tobacco. He says it's been proven that increasing the cost of cigarettes will deter young people from smoking and give adults an incentive to quit. The proposal would actually increase cigarette taxes by more than anti-tobacco groups have asked for. It would give the state one of the highest tobacco taxes in the nation.
