Extension for universities to comply with Proposal 2 denied
(2007-01-23)
LANSING, MI

The U.S. Supreme Court has rejected the request of three Michigan universities to be given more time to comply with Proposal 2, which bans affirmative action. The University of Michigan, Wayne State University and Michigan State University say they are attempting to comply with the measure, which was approved in November. An order issued late in 2006 by U.S. District Judge David Lawson would give universities until July 1st to complete current admissions and financial aid cycles under previous rules. A federal appeals court rejected the deal in late December, forcing the three universities to comply with the law now.
