Cleveland-Cliffs says a proposed 43-percent hike in electric rates could shorten the lifespans of the Tilden and Empire mines. CCI spokesman Dale Hemmila says a yearly power bill of $84 million in 2005 could be as high as $120 million if the rate is approved. Hemmila says the rate hike could close the Tilden mine in 3 to 5 years, while the life of the Empire could also be reduced from its current 20-30 span. The Michigan Public Service Commission is expected to make a decision on the rate hike by this summer.
