Northern Michigan communities receive federal dollars for water system improvements
$19.7 million for water and wastewater system improvements. The federal funding comes in the from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development's Water and Environmental Program through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. The City of Caspian received a $1-million loan and a $3-million grant for wastewater system improvements. A $3.5-million loan and a $1.8-million grant were awarded to the City of Iron River for water system improvements. Mackinac Island received a $7.7-million loan and a $2.5-million grant for wastewater system improvements.
Congressman Bart Stupak says the investment of stimulus funding in Northern Michigan will help these communities update infrastructure, create jobs, and provide safe drinking water to the surrounding areas.
