M-DOT's Don't Veer for Deer campaign underway
(2009-11-19)
(wnmu) - With the beginning of Firearm Deer Season, Michigan motorists are reminded of the danger deer on the move pose. The Michigan Department of Transportation's campaign, Don't Veer for Deer' reminds motorists to be on the lookout for deer. Between the hours of sunset and sunrise deer are on the run, further increasing the possibility of a deer related crash. State Transportation Director Kirk Steudle says drivers should be alert for both deer and hunters who may be crossing the roadway or walking along roadsides. Steudle says drivers must brake firmly and come to a controlled stop if a crash with a deer is unavoidable even if that means striking the animal. Motorists should then move their vehicles off to the shoulder as far as possible. For more information visit www.michigan.gov/mdot.
