Caseloads rise as unemployment rises
(2009-11-19)
DELTA COUNTY, MI
(wnmu) -
With unemployment in Michigan rising, caseloads are also rising as people turn to the state for help. According to Delta County Michigan Department of Human Services Supervisor, Russ Sexton, the department has seen an increase in caseloads however, fortunately cannot compare to downstate caseworkers who are dealing with hostile clients. Sexton says there have been reports of caseworkers being assaulted by clients who are frustrated with the delays occurring with their cases. He adds that clients have been very understanding towards the DHS in Delta County. Currently, most of the requests needing to be answered in the county are emergency needs such as heating and housing assistance. Sexton says he expects to see an additional 1,200 requests for emergency assistance in January.
