New research at Michigan Tech
(2009-11-06)
(wnmu) - One assistant professor's idea from reading an article has started a new study at Michigan Technological University with some interesting results. Assistant Professor in the Ecology department, Joseph Bump joined with 2 other MTU professors, Rolf Peterson and Jon Vucetich to research how carcasses of moose killed by wolves at Isle Royale National Park enriches soil at carcass spots. Their pilot study revealed significant soil responses. Bump says the study is very important to future research. Bump says the team of researchers will continue collecting data and their next step will be to see if changes in packs and hunting areas or changes in social structures have an affect on soil nutrient cycling and fertility levels.
