Pediatric M-S Center Coming to Buffalo
The National Multiple Sclerosis Society is naming the University at Buffalo's Jacob Neurological Institute a Center of Excellence. With the distinction the M-S Society is awarding the Institute a $1.8 million grant to establish a Pediatric M-S Center at Women and Children Hospital.
The Center will be one of six in the country. It's Director, Dr. Bianca Weinstock-Guttman says the Pediatric Center will focus on three elements.
"Caring for children with Multiple Sclerosis...educating primary care physicians and families about symptoms and treatment options...and advancing clinical and basic science research," Weinstock-Guttman.
Nationwide about 10,000 children have M-S. Locally it effects more people than just about anywhere else. Guttman says the latest research indicates that the lack of Vitamin D may be a factor.
