Home Heating Assistance in Northwest
(2006-01-11)
(KPLU) - As energy prices rise, Northwest governors are pledging to help families heat their homes this winter.

During her State of the State speech Tuesday night, Washington Governor Christine Gregoire urged lawmakers to take immediate action.

"I am challenging you to pass, in the first week of this session, initial assistance for our neighbors and friends who are struggling with high home heating bills."

Gregoire wants lawmakers to put more than $7 million from a legal settlement into a home-heating fund.

Republicans say the governor should have called a special session last fall to address this issue.

Meanwhile, earlier this week, Idaho Governor Dirk Kempthorne proposed to send every resident in the state a fifty-dollar check to off-set heating prices.
