Expert On Casino Gambling Speaks in Buffalo
(2004-11-17)
(wned) - Baylor University economist Earl Grinols, a nationally recognized expert on casino gambling, says casinos aren't worth the damage they do to their host communities.

The author of "Gambling in America: Costs and Benefits", is in Buffalo to speak to a group of casino opponents.

Grinols says if you do a cost-benefit analysis of gambling, the bad side wins overwhelmingly.

"This is an activity which damages the people that it damages and the community that it damages to a much greater extent then it creates...any benefits," Grinols told WNED.

Grinols says casinos tend to benefit a handful of people, but most of the population will not be helped. He compares casinos to a sports team.

"The claim is pretty much the same, we'll be an economic draw. The cost to the community...is the social cost which come primarily...from problem and pathological gamblers," Grinols said.

Grinols is speaking tonight (wednesday) at Central Presbyterian Church at the corner of Main St. and Jewitt Parkway at 7:00 pm.
