MARQUETTE
(wnmu) -
The north central Upper Peninsula is up and running once again, following a lengthy power outage. At around 11:45 Sunday morning, all Marquette Board of Light and Power customers and Alger-Delta Cooperative consumers experienced a total loss of electricity. Marquette BLP officials say they were performing annual maintenance on their largest generator, Shiras Unit 3, so the region was running on one generator and purchased electricity from a neighboring utility. Initial reports show the connection between the BLP and the utility failed, causing the shutdown. Initial attempts to restore power were blocked when a BLP substation component failed, and had to be repaired. Around 3:30 p.m., authorities started a small combustion turbine to get power to critical circuits. The largest generator was then restarted and finally brought back online around 10 p.m. Power was restored to most customers shortly thereafter.
