Bengals Fire LeBeau
(2002-12-30)
(wvxu) - Dick LeBeau has lost his job as head coach of the Cincinnati Bengals, after the team stumbled through its worst season in franchise history. Owner Mike Brown fired the 65-year-old LeBeau during a meeting this morning. There is no immediate word on who the new coach will be or what will happen to LeBeau's coaching staff. Brown calls the Bengals season "acutely disappointing". He says new direction is needed for 2003. LeBeau's contract ended after the season; but several assistants are under contract through next year. In a terse, written statement LeBeau says "I got the job, I kept it for three years and lost the job. In between, I worked as hard as I could. End of statement. End of story." LeBeau's record since taking over the team in the 2000 season is 12-and-33, the worst percentage of the eight head coaches in Bengals history. © Copyright 2012, wvxu
