Leftovers from food fest go to the hungry
The Rosenthal Fresh Food Initiative is about three years old. Until now it has been re-distributing surplus food from corporate cafeterias and private functions such as catered dinners. But now that a precedent has been established at ChiliFest, Mannigan hopes to be able to recycle unused food from other large, citywide public events such as Oktoberfest and Taste of Cincinnati.

The Freestore Foodbank has found a way to recycle surplus food from major public events in Greater Cincinnati. About 900 pounds of unused, stored food from last weekend's ChiliFest have been taken to eight Cincinnati area soup kitchens and social service agencies to feed the hungry. Kevin Mannigan is manager of the Freestore's Rosenthal Fresh Food Initiative, which picks up and re-distributes the surplus food. He says there are certain guidelines the agency must follow in order to make sure the food is safe. "We can't take food that's been sitting out on the buffet or that people have had access to. Now, if you've made extra leftovers and they didn't hit the buffet or you made extra leftovers and they don't make it out to be served, then that's food that we typically try to rescue."
