States Cut Deal to Protect Children on MySpace
(2008-01-15)
(wned) - States across the country, including New York, have cut a deal with the MySpace social networking web site to better limit use by on-line predators.

With the exception of Texas, every state has signed onto a deal with MySpace to give parents better control over what their children are doing on-line and to better protect kids by improving filters against inappropriate use.

Under the agreement, MySpace will create a task force to improve the safety of users and other social-networking sites will be invited to participate.

New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo says the agreement gives parents more information about what's being done on the computer.

"The parent should take the time to look at the site that the child is visiting. Many of them will have information in the beginning about what a parent should know," Cuomo told WNED News.

The popular websites have created a venue for sexual predators who lie about their age to lure young victims and for cyber bullies who send threatening and anonymous messages.

"The ugliness, the depravity, the quantity is frightening...they can't be careful enough," Cuomo added.

The attorney general says he is very familiar with the issues since he has 13-year old twins and a 10-year-old who want to use these networking sites.
