Of the counties in Illinois, Stephenson had the largest number of immigrants from Germany settle within its boundaries. An examination of parts of that migration story will be told on Tuesday, 26 February by retired Highland Comunity College instructor Wendell Kurr at Freeport Public Library in the next installment in the 2013 Lectures in American History Series.
“The Ostfriesen Immigration to Stephenson County” refers the coastal region in the northwest of modern day Germany. After the Napoleonic Wars there was a large migration of the people there to the United States. Many Stephenson County residents today trace their ancestry to that part of Europe.
