More Buffalo Students Wearing Uniforms
(2008-09-16)
(wned) - A few years ago, a handful of Buffalo's Public Schools required students
to wear uniforms. But things have changed.

"Nearly half the schools in this district have uniforms," said At-large Board of Education member Christopher Jacobs.

Officials say 31 of Buffalo's 66 schools now require uniforms, most of them at the insistence of parents of students attending the schools.

Jacobs joined Superintendent James Williams and others at a ceremony Tuesday at the City's Math, Science, and Technology Preparatory School on East Delavan near Grider Street, where dozens of students from throughout the Disttrict displayed their uniforms.

The required outfits include white, gray or Navy blue shirts or blouses and khakis or navy blue trousers, skirts, or jumpers.

Supporters say uniforms promote learning and instill pride in students
who wear them. Many parents also support the use of uniforms to eliminate the peer pressure to wear the most fashionable clothes.

The uniforms are mostly found in Buffalo elementary and middle schools, but at least four city high schools also have them.
