Control Board Backs Collins in Rejecting Labor Settlement
According to the Buffalo News, the Erie County Legislature agreed earlier this year to a $600, one-time payment to each worker in an effort to settle a 3-year old bargaining dispute, but yesterday the control board refused to back the plan.
In response to the rejection, John Orlando, President of Local 1095 of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, referred to the board as, "this group of idiots."
The settlement would have cost the county $800-thousand. Erie County Executive Chris Collins argued against the payout saying that the county cannot afford such an expense at this time.
AFSCME, which represents the 1200 workers involved in the proposed settlement, and 5 other county unions are currently working without contracts
