Education Leaders Discuss Reform
(2008-09-15)
(wned) - New York State Board of Regents Chancellor Robert Bennett says graduation rates in some Buffalo Public Schools as low as 50-percent spells economic disaster for the community.

Bennett says the ranking of local school districts released last week by Business First makes the inequity in education obvious.

The way to improve performance, Bennett says, is to regionalize schools.

Buffalo School Superintendant Dr. James Williams points out that some programs like transportation and special ed are regionalized. Williams wants to do more.

Chancellor Bennett says he believes surburban districts will eventually go along with regionalism, but he says the state has to make it easier by changing the law.

A skilled workforce Bennett says will also make for a more productive society.
