(wned) - Mayor Byron Brown, Erie County Executive Chris Collins and members of Buffalo's Police and Fire Departments gathered on the steps of City Hall Thursday to mark the seventh anniversary of 9-11.

Fire Commissioner Michael Lombardo reminded those in attendance that 2,974 Americans lost their lives that day, including 60-police officers and 343-New York City Firefighters.

Lombardo says a lot of times we look at those as numbers and statistics, but he says we have to remember they were all people.

"They didn't lose their lives, they gave their lives for the 25,000 people that were rescued from those towers and for all of us as Americans," Lombardo said.

Meanwhile, in Niagara Falls members of that City's Fire Department gathered at Engine 8 on Hyde Park Boulevard for a short rememberance service. It included a toll of the Fire Service bell for every fighter who was killed on 9-11 and the laying of a wreath at the Niagara Falls Fire Department's memorial.

Other ceremonies were to be held in Amherst, Lackawanna and at Hilbert College in Hamburg.
