Fitness Campaign Targets Childhood Obesity
(2008-09-10)
(wned) - An initiative designed to change the lifestyle habits of children throughout Western New York is underway.

At Buffalo's Westminster Charter School this morning, Independent Health Foundation officially launched its "Fitness for Kids Challenge."

The program's goal is to combat the increase in obesity and type-2 diabetes in students 14 and younger.

Through education, rewards and school competitions, the Fitness Challenge will encourage students to take part in health and fitness activities.

"Fitness for Kids will challenge every youth 14 and under to increase their physical activity and eat better, all aiming at improving their levels of health and wellness. If we can get you to do this earlier, the chance is that this is going to be a habit for a lifetime and we're going to have a healthier community," said Independent Health Vice President Gretchen Fierle.

So far, nearly 60,000 students in more than 150 schools across the region have pledged to take part.

The program runs through May of 2009.
