Kryzan Surprises with Primary Victory
(2008-09-10)
Alice Kryzan's primary victory stunned political observers.
(wned) - Alice Kryzan pulled off an impressive, upset primary victory Tuesday, and will represent the Democratic Party in the battle against Republican Chris Lee for the 26th Congressional District seat.

She was heavily outspent and ran against the Democratic-endorsed
candidate. Kryzan did so successfully, picking up 42% of the vote to 36% for Jon Powers, who was endorsed by the district's county chairmen.

Industrialist Jack Davis found out that the third time was not the charm as he gained only 23% of the vote. Davis was narrowly defeated by Republican incumbent Tom Reynolds in 2004 and 2006.

Addressing dozens of supporters at her campaign headquarters on Main St
in Williamsville last night, Kryzan said she made up her mind to run a year ago.

"Politics is never easy. This was a contentious race, to say the least, one that sometines strayed from the issues facing the district," Kryzan said.

"But our victory signifies that the people of this district are yearning for a representative who understands the true meaning of politics."

Jon Powers was endorsed by the Democratic Party Chairs from all 7 counties representing the 26th Congressional District, but often sparred with millionaire Jack Davis.

"The campaign in that district got very negative. Very unfortunate," said Erie County Democratic Committee Chair Len Lenihan.

"Alice Kryzan benefitted by staying positive and sticking to the issues."

In the November election, Kryzan will face another political newcomer in Amherst businessman Chris Lee

"She's a very liberal person, a very capable lawyer, but a Nancy Pelosi-type clone," offered Erie County Republican Chairman James Domagalski.

"Chris Lee is going to be a progessive Republican. When you compare the two of them, especially with somebody like Sarah Palin on the Republican ticket, it's going to help Chris Lee quite a bit."
