City Steps Up Effort to Enforce Youth Curfew
(2008-09-05)
(wned) - The recent rash of youth violence on Buffalo streets has prompted a renewed effort to enforce the city's curfew ordinance.

Mayor Brown today announced a collaborative effort aimed at keeping young people off city streets at late hours.

The Pathways Partnership Initiative provides for the city's first youth drop-off site: the Edward Saunders Community Center on 2777 Bailey Avenue.

"We now...will have the resources with responsible adults to be at this location when children are picked up for violating the curfew. They will be able to be supervised, they will be able to be properly monitored until they can be returned to parents," said Brown.

The city curfew is in effect from 11 pm to 5 am Monday through Thursday and from
midnight to 5 am Friday and Saturday for youths under the age 17.

While the curfew has been on the books for nearly 15 years, the mayor says budget cuts have led to a lack of enforcement.

The pilot program is being funded through a $90,000 state grant.

Recent violent incidents include the shooting death of a 14-year-old girl and the woundings of two young girls sprayed by birdshot on the city's East side..
