Anti Violence Group Focuses on Recent Shootings
(2008-09-04)
(wned) - The mayor, the police commissioner and community activists went door to door Wednesday in a Buffalo neighborhood hit hard by violence.

They handed out flyers asking the public for information, to help find the people responsible for a string of shootings in the area around Genesee and Sprenger. Victims included a 14-year-old girl, shot and killed last week, and a seven-year-old and a 13-year-old wounded in a spray of birdshot on Monday.

Mayor Brown met at a street-corner cookout sponsored by the "Stop the Violence Coalition" and encouraged young people to find alternatives to settling disputes other than a gun.

Brown called for an end to the violence.

"We are here to collectively say as a community, enough is enough," Brown said.

Police Commissioner McCarthy Gipson says his officers are working hard to stop the violence and there was a heavy police presence for Wednesday's event.

Police also urged residents who may have information about the shootings to contact the department's confidential tipline at: 847-2255.
