Local African Americans React to Obama's Nomination
(2008-08-29)
Barack Obama accepted the Democratic Party's nomination for president.
(wned) - Forty-five years after Martin Luther King said he had a dream, Barack Obama has accepted the Democratic party's nomination for president.

He's the first black man to win a presidential nomination from a major political party. His acceptance came in front of more than 80,000 people at Denver's Mile High Stadium.

Dozens of Obama supporters gathered at the Town Ballroom Thursday night to watch their candidate's acceptance speech. Young and old, black and white, male and female cheered as their candidate spoke on a giant T-V screen.

Attorney John Elmore was there, reminded of the days when his father could come home from the Navy and be bypassed for a job by another sailor because of race...and how things have changed.

"This is a day that is going to go down in history," Elmore said.

Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown was in Denver for the convention. He says many people are excited about Obama's historic nomination.

"This has been something special, certainly for African American delegates, but just seeing the emotion that white delegates, Hispanic delegates, Asian delegates, Native delegates...there is just tremendous emotion among everyone that is here," Brown told WNED.

WNED's Jim Ranney talked about Obama's nomination with Frank Messiah, President of the Buffalo branch of the NAACP.
