Wyoming County Workers Fear Job Losses
(2010-03-17)

(wned) - Hundreds of workers rallied outside the Buffalo offices of Senator Kirsten Gillibrand and Representative Louise Slaughter this morning.

Nearly 200 employees of Sallie Mae made the 50-mile trip from Arcade in an effort to save their jobs. At issue is student loan reform legislation folded into the healthcare bill working its way through Congress.

Sallie Mae Senior Director Jack Frazier says the bill threatens hundreds of jobs in Wyoming County.

"These are good-paying jobs...the politicans are making it 'students vs. banks.' There's no bankers in this crowd. These are 'Main Street' jobs right here in Western New York, where we can't afford to lose more jobs," said Frazier.

Frazier says he and his company support student loan reform, but questioned why the issue is attached to healthcare reform legislation.

Sallie Mae is one of Wyoming County's largest employers. The workers also rallied outside Senator Charles Schumer's office in Rochester.
