County Clerks Deliver Signatures Opposing New License Plates
In April, state lawmakers passed a measure requiring New York drivers to buy new license plates in 2010 in order to raise $129 million dollars in revenue. Over the weekend, leaders in Albany backed off the plan, saying they would look to raise money elsewhere.
Erie County Clerk Kathy Hochul was one of many county clerks who urged residents to sign online petitions protesting the plan. Hochul says the more than 106,000 New Yorkers who added their signatures made a significant impact.
"I want to take back the message to the people: Yes, it made a difference when you went online and signed the petition," said Hochul. "Together, you spoke loudly."
Hochul said the requirement was "wrong" to begin with and the outcry from New York drivers was heard "loud and clear." She says she would like to see to measure formally repealed in the next few days.

Calling it a "moral victory for the people of New York State," Erie County Clerk Kathy Hochul joined more than a dozen fellow clerks from across the state in Albany today in applauding the seeming reversal of a license plate requirement that now appears likely to be repealed.
