New License Plate Measure May Run Out of Gas
But,Paterson said,legislators would need to find a way to cover the estimated $129 million the new plates would bring to the state treasury.

Over the weekend, state lawmakers seemed to have come around to the Governor's way of thinking.
"The plan to issue new license plates for all vehicles will not go forward," said Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver and Republican Minority Leader Brian Kolb in a joint statement Sunday.
"It's (a car) not a luxury in our area. It's a necessity, so hitting us with DMV fees is just unfair," said Erie County Clerk Kathy Hochul who is scheduled to join other county clerks today in Albany. They've been pushing an on-line petition protesting the new license plates, which to date has gathered 100,000 signatures.
Some are looking over state spending looking for ways to cover the $129 million.
"There's a big, juicy plum on the table," said State Senator Antoine Thompson. "It's $8 billion in outside consultants!"
