Adirondack Council Endorses Proposition One
(2009-11-02)
(wned) - The Election Day ballot will include a pair of statewide propositions, one of which will affect a small Adirondack town.

Tupper Lake residents are hoping for the passage of Proposition One, which would allow National Grid to erect new power lines in the area.

John Sheehan of the Adirondack Council says the "Forever Wild" clause in the state constitution protects the natural integrity of the mountain region by restricting building on reserved pristine areas.

In this case, Sheehan is hopeful that voters say "yes" to the initiative. Tupper Lake's aging infrastructure suffers frequent wintertime power outages, forcing residents to spend nights in emergency shelters.

If Proposition One passes, National Grid will deed several acres of old growth forest to the Adirondack Preserve.
