Group Rallies Behind Red Cross Workers
BUFFALO
(wned) -
Protestors gathered outside the American Red Cross offices on Delaware Avenue in Buffalo this morning.
Members of the WNY Worker's Rights Board have released a report that raises concerns about donor safety and the security of the nation's blood supply. The report faults lenghthy hours, low pay and high turnover among front-line workers.
CWA Local 1122 President James Wagner says the biggest stumbling block is health insurance.
"They want us to bargain away the union's right and ability to negotiate...and that's unacceptable at this time. So not only does it severely increase the cost to our members, but it takes away the union's right," said Wagner.
Coalition for Economic Justice spokesman Andy Reynolds says Red Cross employees across the country have been working without a contract since March.
Calls seeking comment from the Red Cross have not been returned.
