Online Organ Donation Registry Coming Soon
Upstate New York Transplant Services President and CEO Mark Simon tells WNED News the current paper system is cumbersome and it has led to New York having one of the worst rates of organ donation in the U.S.
Simon says the Electronic Signature Act will make it easier to carry out the wishes of people who want to donate.
"It'll make it easier for families who wrestle with the decision, Did my love one want to be a donor? We never had the conversation. Having access to a registry so we can sit with a family member and say This is what your loved one wanted," said Simon.
UNYTS estimates that tissue and eye donation from Western New Yorkers can save or enhance the lives of nearly 25,000 people each year.
