Closed Police Station Declared Non-Hazardous
(2010-03-12)
Mayor Brown and Councilmember Golombek, along with Keith Keller of Leader Professional Service, Inc., announce the final air quality report for the Buffalo Police Department’s D District.
(wned) - The City of Buffalo today released the results of enivonmental testing conducted at the Buffalo Police D District station on Hertel Avenue. Analysis conducted by Leader Professional Service, Inc. found that the building was not a hazardous environment.

D District was closed in February after an employee complained of mold in the building. A number of employees who worked in the building reported illnesses. Personnel and services were moved out as environmental testing began.

Mold was found in certain areas. The building will be remediated, a process that is expected to take months to complete.

"It does not appear that there is any environmental issue that should be causing employees of the building to be getting sick," said Mayor Brown. "The air sampling results for mold indicate that the air quality is not being adversely impacted by mold. There is no airborne asbestos at the site."

City leaders have found a new temporary location for D District personnel in All Saints Roman Catholic church on Chadduck Avenue in Riverside.

The final environmental report has been provided to the police union. Mayor Brown says the PBA is free to conduct its own testing if so desired.
