Paterson Addresses Rumors, Assails Media
resigning form office, saying the only way he is leaving is "in a box."
Paterson, addressing the media for the first time since rumors began circulating that he might resign over a scandalous news story that
was to appear in the New York Times, says there's no truth to any of the tales about misconduct in his personal life. The governor also lashed out at the Times, which he acknowledged is doing a profile piece on him, saying it was "appalling" that the newspaper did nothing to quell the rumors.
"I was owed, as a human being, if not professional journalism, the right and the opportunity not to have the people of the State of New York thinking that their governor was about to resign, when there hasn't been one shred of evidence that any of these charges that were made against me were even true," Paterson said.
Paterson says he was interviewed by the Times on Tuesday, and no questions were asked about any alleged irregularities in his personal life.
The governor says his family has been supportive, telling him "not to give up", and he says he's still seeking election.
"The only way I'm not going to be governor next year is at the ballot box," said Paterson. "And the only way that I'll be leaving office before is in a box."
Paterson would not speculate on who might be behind the persistent reports of his personal transgressions, saying he did not want to start any more rumors.
