Unemployment Rate Drops Slightly
The State Labor Department says New York's jobless rate climbed to 9 percent in October. That's up from 8.9 percent in September. Officials say that's the highest level since April 1983.
In the Buffalo-Niagara region, the unemployment rate fell to 8.3 percent in October, down from 8.4 percent in September.
Still, the Labor Department says the region continues to shed jobs...losing nearly 17-thousand jobs in the past year.
The unemployment rate in New York City remained steady at 10.3 percent.
Outside New York City, the lowest unemployment rate, 5.7 percent, was in Tompkins County. The highest rate was in Steuben County at 9.6 percent.
