WNY Delegation Votes Party Line on Healthcare Bill
(2009-11-09)
(wned) - Congressman Brian Higgins says he voted "enthusiastically" in favor of the health insurance reform bill that cleared the House of Representatives on Saturday.

Critics claim the bill will cost too much and gut Medicare. Higgins, a Buffalo Democrat, says the legislation is designed to strengthen all programs that currently exist and create new choices and competition.

Higgins says the current system is unaffordable, unsustainable and unacceptable.

"People will receive better health care throughout the entire system, including and especially seniors," said Higgins.

Congressman Chris Lee, a Clarence Republican, voted no. Lee says the legislation will not lead to meaningful health care reform or lower costs but will instead create a government run system, higher taxes and poorer quality.

Democratic Rep. Louise Slaughter also voted in favor of the bill.
