Driver in Fatal Clarence Crash was Speeding at 90 mph
(2009-11-06)
(wned) - Investigators say a driver in Sunday's crash in Clarence that claimed the lives of four teenagers ran a stop sign at high rate of speed.

Erie County Sheriff's deputy Sgt. Scott Joslyn told reporters that a computer model of the reconstructed scene shows that 18-year-old Viktor Shapiro was driving at nearly 90 miles-per-hour when his 2002 Nissan was t-boned by a mini-van.

"A vehicle that travels 90 miles-per-hour is travelling at approximately 137 feet-per-second...we could be looking at much worse as far as the injuries," said Joslyn.

Shapiro and his passengers 16-year-old Megan Schnorr, 16-year-old Amanda Slisz, and 19-year-old Mark Brown were all pronounced dead at the scene near the corner of County Road and Strickler Road.

Joslyn says if the crash occured a split second sooner, the Wheatfield couple in the van would have suffered more severe injuries. They have both been released from the hospital.

Joslyn says there is no evidence that Shapiro was racing so at this time no criminal charges are being filed.
