President Obama to Award Medal to UB Professor

BUFFALO (wned) - UB Professor Esther Takeuchi will be in the White House tomorrow to receive the National Medal of Technology from President Obama for her work two decades ago in developing the lithium silver vanadium oxide battery which powers the implantable cardiac defibrillator.

That device shocks the heart into a normal rhythm when it goes into fibrillation.

She did the work as a scientist with Greatbatch Incorporated and is now UB's Greatbatch professor of power sources research.
