District Takes Steps to Ensure Safety for Summer School Students
(2009-07-02)
(wned) - Summer School is just around the corner for thousands of students in Buffalo. Even though there are still some cases of swine flu being reported locally, Schools Superintendant Dr. James Williams says the district is prepared for a safe return to classes.

The district's Extended Learning Opportunities Program, or summer school, starts Monday and Superintendant Dr. James Williams says he is confident that district is doing everything it can to prevent the spread of the H1N1 virus.

Along with putting a wall mounted hand-sanitizer in every room, local health care providers are partnering with the district to give each of the ELOP's 1,500 teachers a pocket-sized hand sanitizer.

Also, Kaleida Health Vice President Melva Visher says for the first time, every building in the program will have a nurse.

"We have enahanced that service for this summer, specifically because we want to be very diligent about surveillence of communicable diseases with our children," said Visher.

For parents, a stern warning was issued from Superintendant Dr. James Williams, who urged to "not, under any circumstance, send a sick child to school or any summer program." Williams says it is not fair to the child or the families of healthy children.

The Superintendant also announced that a part-time Medical Director is joining his staff to provide guidance on healthcare policy for the Buffalo Schools.
