Officials are starting today to compile a list of groups using city parks in preparation of January 1st when Erie County hands control of the parks system back to the city of Buffalo. Meanwhile, Common Council members say they have heard almost nothing regarding the approaching change. "We're waiting to respond to what he (Mayor Byron Brown) files with us," said Council President David Franczyk in reference to the parks transfer.
Chinese-American author Ha Jin earned widespread praise for his 1999 novel "Waiting." The book was awarded the National Book Award and the PEN/Faulkner Award. Born in China, Jin was in the United States pursuing his Ph.D. at the time of the 1989 Tiananmen Square Massacre in Beijing. The incident motivated his permanent move to the U.S. and influenced his award-winning work.In a recent visit to the area, Ha Jin offered his thoughts to WNED's Mike Desmond.
The 2010 Erie County Budget is scheduled to be approved on time, December first. Later this week the Legislature is holding a special session to formally accept the spending plan. Next year's proposed budget totals a little more than a $1 billion, but County Executive Chris Collins believes "there's nothing controversial in the budget so I'm going to be optimistic" that it will be passed by the Legislature, which is scheduled to vote on any amendments Wednesday.
