A relaxing day spent walking along roadsides and trails at high elevation, some walking in sun and shaded areas. We will carpool from the Folk Art Center on the Blue Ridge Parkway at Milepost 382. Drivers will be given directions from here. We’ll drive the Blue Ridge Parkway to Mt. Mitchell, stopping at the Balsam Gap Overlook to hike a short distance out on the Big Butt Trail. Lots of ferns, False Hellebore, Blue-bead Lily foliage, asters, goldenrods and other wildflowers can be found along this section of the trail. Birds on this fascinating stretch include White-breasted Nuthatch, Golden-crowned Kinglet, Blackburnian and Canada Warblers, Brown Creeper and Winter Wren. We should also start seeing showy butterflies such as Eastern Tiger and Pipevine Swallowtails. Please contact the Ventures office to register. This Venture is limited to 12 participants.
