Riverwalk Jazz

(2009-03-11)
(wdcb) -
Hosted by David Holt and Jim Cullum, RIVERWALK JAZZ celebrates the lives and music of America's top jazz musicians, past and present. Each week, The Jim Cullum Jazz Band salutes these jazz pioneers in live performances featuring classic jazz and swing music, as well as fascinating stories that bring to life remarkable moments in the history of jazz.

April 4: The Tio Family: A New Orleans Clarinet Dynasty - The Creole Tio Family in New Orleans, produced a long line of master clarinetists and studio music teachers who influenced the first generation of jazz musicians in the Crescent City. The Jim Cullum Jazz Band is joined by the dynamic Evan Christopher on clarinet.

April 11: Boogie Woogie Trio: Albert Ammons, Meade Lux Lewis, & Pete Johnson - They worked day jobs at taxicab companies and car washes. By night, they honed their skills playing "rent parties" on Chicago's South Side. The Jim Cullum Jazz Band and special guest Dick Hyman revive the music of the Boogie Woogie Trio, Albert Ammons, Meade Lux Lewis, and Pete Johnson, who launched the 1938 craze.

April 18: The Inventive Mr. Edison: The Life & Music of Harry Sweets' Edison - An encore presentation, honoring trumpeter Harry Sweets' Edison. A star with the Count Basie Band in the 30s and 40s, Edison forged new territory on trumpet. In this 1994 performance at The Landing, Sweets' Edison joins The Jim Cullum Jazz Band to talk about his life in music and play music from the Basie years.

April 25: Benny Goodman Swinging at 100: A Centenary Celebration - Reedmen Allan Vache and Harry Allen, and vibists John Cocuzzi and Lionel Hampton join The Jim Cullum Jazz Band to celebrate the young Jewish boy from Chicago who changed the face of popular music in America. Benny Goodman transformed 20s'style hot jazz into swing and set off a pop craze spanning the Great Depression and WWII. Riverwalk Jazz honors his 100th birthday with a focus on the Goodman small groups.
