'Cold Mountain' filming in Charleston
(2002-09-09)
(The Charleston Post & Courier) - Downtown Charleston residents are seeing a touch of Tinseltown - for better or for worse - as the big-budget production of "Cold Mountain" is filming in town for the next few days.

Scenes in the film, based on Charles Frazier's novel about a Confederate soldier coming home from the Civil War, are being shot in and around Charleston.

Locations include area plantations, the College of Charleston and Church Street above Broad Street.

In fact, a portion of Church Street is being transformed into an outdoor set, complete with wooden sidewalks and a mound of mulch on the pavement.

Not everyone is thrilled about Charleston's turn as Hollywood South, however. Some neighborhood residents have complained about disruptions, although others say they have no problem with the project.

It's something of an echo of what happened a few years ago when downtown residents complained that the filming of scenes for the film "The Patriot" disrupted traffic and caused other headaches.

City officials say that filming since then has gone more smoothly.
