Going To Extremes for Home Team
(2007-10-28)
(Associated Press) -

Clutching a lucky basketball, refusing to watch televised games and shunning toothbrushes in the color of a rival team may seem like extreme behavior for sports fans.

But, according to a new AP poll, one in five fans do these and other things to bring good luck to their favorite clubs.

A University of Kentucky rooter says he watches games in blue-and-white apparel, while clutching his lucky basketball.

A Cleveland Indians supporter in West Virginia says she won't watch crucial games on TV. Still, that didn't help on Sunday, when the Indians lost to Boston, giving the Red Sox a ride to the World Series.

And about that toothbrush -- an Auburn University football fan blamed her team's losses on a pink one she was given. For years, she's refused to own anything with even a hint of red -- the color of Auburn rival Alabama.
