Company Experiments with Free Music Downloads
A Web site that allows visitors to download music and videos for free launched this week in the U.S. and Canada.
SpiralFrog.com is supported by advertising. It has arranged to pay record companies a cut of its ad revenue.
It's hoping to lure music fans who normally flock to online file-swapping networks to download music for free. The recording industry has sued thousands of computer users for doing that.
SpiralFrog's chairman and founder, Joe Mohen, says the hope is that it will emerge as "a very powerful alternative to the pirate sites." He says with his service, "there's no threat of viruses, adware or spyware."
More than 800,000 tracks and 3,500 music videos are available for download.
