New Home For Jazz Program
The Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz is moving from the University of Southern California to Loyola University in New Orleans.
Jazz pianist Herbie Hancock, saxophonist Wayne Shorter and trumpeter and New Orleans native Terence Blanchard will join the program's incoming class for a performance today to celebrate the move.
Institute officials say a number of factors led to the program being moved to New Orleans, including the city's need for music mentors. Many musicians scattered after Hurricane Katrina.
Students in the program will work with young people in the local school systems. Today's celebration includes a performance for New Orleans-area high school students.
