Classical guitarist Michael Cedric Smith presents an evening of music from the romantic era by Johann Kaspar Mertz, Frédéric Chopin, Franz Schubert, and Giulio Regondi, as well as Matteo Carcassi’s Fantasy on The Bronze Horse (an opera by D. F. E. Auber) from 1835, and works by Antonio Lauro and Domenico Scarlatti.
Smith’s enduring interest in 19th-century music and its interpretation began during his studies at Peabody Conservatory of Music in Baltimore, and he became one of the first modern guitarists to present the works of Mertz.
Smith will also conduct master classes with Blair students from 2-4 p.m. Sunday, March 17, in Steve and Judy Turner Recital Hall. These sessions are also free and open to the public.
