Acclaimed for his commanding stage presence and inventive artistry, Grammy-winning American bass-baritone Eric Owens has carved a unique place in the contemporary opera world as an esteemed interpreter of classic works and a champion of new music. Owens comes to Blair’s stage after a reputation-making run as Alberich in the Metropolitan Opera’s new production of Richard Wagner’s Ring Cycle, and a summer as Artist-in-Residence at the Glimmerglass Festival, where he appeared in Aïda and Kurt Weill’s Lost in the Stars.
Owens’ program at Vanderbilt covers classics of the opera repertoire, including works by Hugo Wolf, Robert Schumann, Franz Schubert, Claude Debussy, Maurice Ravel and, of course, Wagner. Lovers of opera won’t want to miss this chance to see a rising star and acknowledged master of the craft.
Owens is joined by esteemed pianist Warren Jones, a highly acclaimed solo artist and award-winning collaborative pianist also regularly partners top vocal artists, including Thomas Hampson, with whom he performed at Blair in 2012.
NOTE: This performance is free and open to the public, but tickets are required. Tickets will be available in the Blair School of Music office on January 23, 2013. Please see http://blair.vanderbilt.edu/news/2013/01/eric-owens-to-perform-at-blair-feb-23-%E2%80%94-important-ticket-info/for details.
Owens will also conduct a master class with Blair students from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Sunday, February 24, in Ingram Hall. This session is also free and open to the public.
