Commemoration Ceremony - 75th Anniversary of the 1939 Flood

On July 4, 1939, as Morehead was caught up in an Independence Day celebration, a raging fire destroyed a Main Street hotel and several businesses, and a flash flood along the East Fork of Triplett Creek resulted in 25 deaths, all within the span of 24 hours, changing the lives of the people of Morehead and the surrounding area forever.

A memorial plaque will be unveiled and a remembrance ceremony held for the victims and families at noon, at the Chamber of Commerce (former C&O RR Depot) on First Street. There will be a tent set up on the west lawn for sharing and remembrance.

The Morehead Theatre Guild will present a 30-minute drama about the story of the flood, written by J.D. Reeder, followed by a presentation by Dr. Gary Agee, author of

Will In Frozen Country: A Novel Recalling Kentucky’s Worst Flash Flood July 5, 1939, and a reading by Danny Mabry. This will be held at 4 p.m., at the Rowan County Arts Center (RCAC); the cost is $5, proceeds will benefit the RCAC.
