May 10, 10:30AM-3:30PM
On Saturday, May 10, Sherrie Cocanougher, of Parksville, will be demonstrating how she creates jewelry using recycled silverware and flatware from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea.

Cocanougher is a lampwork glass artist from the small Forkland community in Boyle County. She has been working with soft glass for more than six years, and her initial training was procured in Louisville, at Glassworks. She has taught herself about jewelry by reading, watching video tutorials and practicing.

Cocanougher has always had a love for craft jewelry and color, and lampworked glass has been the outlet for her expression. She creates the links and findings in her jewelry by hand, from fine silver, copper and gold-filled wire. Working from her garage studio, Cocanougher uses mostly soft glass from Moretti and Vetrofond and anneals her glass in a digitally controlled kiln.

Cocanougher’s signature design incorporates vintage silverware into her bracelets and necklaces. Searching in antique stores and rummage sales, she finds odd silverware pieces, which she tumbles in a rock polisher to clean and polish the surfaces of the flatware. She then combines the refurbished silverware handles with her handmade glass beads to create unique jewelry.

Cocanougher is a juried member of the Kentucky Guild of Artists and Craftsmen, the Louisville Artist Guild and the Sheltowee Artisan Guild, and her work is regularly available at the Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea, 200 Artisan Way, just off Interstate 75 at Berea Exit 77. The center’s exhibits, shopping and travel information areas are open daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and the cafe is open from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Admission is free.

The Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea currently features works by more than 700 artisans from more than 100 counties across the Commonwealth. Special exhibits on display include “Repurposed & Recycled: Works by Kentucky Artisans,” through Sept. 6; and on display in the lobby, “Kentucky Bourbon: Distillation and Inspiration,” through July 6. For more information about events call 859-985-5448.

The Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea is an agency in the Kentucky Tourism, Arts and Heritage Cabinet.
